Brazilian-German Cooperation at the Center of Amazon Week in Berlin
The event highlights sustainable development, climate action, and cultural diplomacy between Brazil and Germany
June 24th, 2025From June 2nd to 13th, the Embassy of Brazil in Berlin hosted Amazon Week, an event that brought together diplomats, researchers, investors, cultural institutions, and members of the public to focus on the Amazon’s future. Organized in collaboration with Brazilian agencies and German partners, the event aimed to strengthen cooperation between Brazil and Germany in areas like climate action, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable development.
Amazon Week is more than just a series of conferences. It reflects Brazil’s commitment to presenting the Amazon not only as a region facing environmental challenges but also as a space of opportunity for innovation through sustainable business. The event comes at a crucial time, as Brazil prepares to host the COP30 Climate Summit in Belém in 2025, and as international cooperation becomes key to tackling the climate crisis.
Throughout the week, the Embassy organized a diverse program that combined policy discussions, scientific panels, cultural exhibitions, and culinary experiences. One of the key moments was the panel “Green Finance as a Driver for Sustainable Development in the Amazon”, where Brazilian and German experts discussed how international investment can support conservation efforts while generating economic opportunities for local communities.
The cultural side of Amazon Week was equally present. The exhibition “Cosmoperceptions of the Forest”, hosted at the Brazilian Embassy in partnership with the Goethe-Institut, featured works by Indigenous women artists, offering visitors a window into Amazonian perspectives on nature and identity. Film screenings and talks complemented the exhibit, opening conversations about the historical narratives surrounding the Amazon and its peoples.
The Museum für Naturkunde also became part of the event with “BioInsecta”, a joint exhibition exploring the Amazon’s insect biodiversity. It was the result of cooperation between Brazilian scientists and German research institutions, highlighting how science diplomacy plays a key role in strengthening bilateral relations.
Food was another bridge between cultures. Workshops led by chefs from Pará introduced Berliners to traditional Amazonian ingredients, while receptions at the embassy offered a taste of Brazil’s biodiversity through dishes prepared with products sourced from Indigenous and local communities in the Amazon.
Technology and science were central themes. A session led by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) focused on forest monitoring, deforestation control, and data-sharing initiatives between Brazil and Europe. These tools are vital for both environmental protection and international climate commitments.
In his opening speech, the Brazilian Ambassador stressed the importance of partnerships like the one between Brazil and Germany to face global challenges. “The Amazon is a responsibility we share with the world, but it’s also a source of knowledge, culture, and sustainable development,” he said.
Amazon Week is part of a broader Brazilian public diplomacy effort in Europe, aiming to reshape how the Amazon is perceived—not just as a rainforest in danger, but as a region full of solutions, innovation, and resilience. The event also underlines how Brazilian-German cooperation can be a model for environmental and cultural partnerships worldwide.
