On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 7:00 pm, the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin will host a panel discussion spotlighting the courageous actions of Aracy de Carvalho and Ruth Andreas-Friedrich—two women who risked their lives to resist Nazism. This event is part of the exhibition “New Beginnings in a Foreign Land,” which commemorates 200 years of German-speaking migration to Brazil. With participation from historian Mônica Raisa Schpun and journalist Luciana Rangel, the discussion will explore the extraordinary stories of Carvalho, a Brazilian diplomat in Hamburg, and Andreas-Friedrich, a German resistance member in Berlin, who both saved lives during WWII.

The panel, moderated by Dr. Karen Macknow Lisboa, will delve into how these women’s actions defied both Hitler’s Nazi regime and the authoritarian rule of Getúlio Vargas in Brazil. The event aims to draw connections between Carvalho and Andreas-Friedrich, examining their shared commitment to human rights and their impact within a turbulent historical context that forced thousands to flee Germany, with many seeking refuge in Brazil.

The evening promises to be an insightful journey through history and heroism, highlighting how acts of compassion and bravery transcended borders. Attendees are encouraged to watch the ARTE documentary “Aracy, der Engel von Hamburg” to gain a deeper understanding of Aracy de Carvalho’s life-saving efforts in Nazi Germany. The event will be held in Portuguese with free admission, though registration is required due to limited seating.
