Brazil and Germany Strengthen Scientific Cooperation at FAPESP Week Germany
Research partnerships take center stage in Berlin, highlighting Brazil’s growing role in global science diplomacy.
June 24th, 2025On March 25th and 26th, 2025, the Embassy of Brazil in Berlin hosted FAPESP Week Germany, an event organized by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in partnership with the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Free University of Berlin. The two-day program brought together Brazilian and German researchers, diplomats, and academic leaders to celebrate existing scientific partnerships and explore future opportunities for collaboration.
FAPESP Week Germany highlighted the increasing importance of international scientific cooperation as a tool for addressing global challenges. The event featured presentations and panels on topics ranging from climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development to artificial intelligence, open science, and Indigenous knowledge.
The opening ceremony was attended by the President of FAPESP, Marco Antonio Zago, and the President of the Free University of Berlin, Günter Ziegler, who both emphasized the significance of deepening scientific ties between Brazil and Germany. Ambassador Roberto Jaguaribe, representing Brazil, stressed the importance of science diplomacy in fostering stronger bilateral relations and advancing shared priorities between both countries.
Throughout the two days, researchers from institutions in São Paulo and Germany exchanged knowledge, presented joint projects, and discussed how to strengthen academic mobility and joint funding mechanisms. The program also included discussions on ethical research practices, inclusion of underrepresented groups in science, and the role of universities in fostering innovation.
A key message repeated throughout the event was the importance of building bridges between research and society. Participants underscored how scientific cooperation contributes not only to technological progress but also to strengthening democratic values, combating misinformation, and promoting sustainable development.
The event concluded with a reception at the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin, where Ambassador Jaguaribe reiterated Brazil’s commitment to expanding scientific and academic exchanges with Germany. He noted that events like FAPESP Week Germany demonstrate how diplomacy and science can work hand in hand to address global challenges.
FAPESP Week Germany forms part of a broader effort by Brazil to position itself as a key partner in international scientific networks, reinforcing its presence in Europe and strengthening ties with Germany’s academic and diplomatic communities.
