Biennial Children’s and Youth Film Festival “The Future is Africa” held in Berlin in 2025
Festival highlights young voices and political expression across the continent
October 17th, 2025From September 17-21 in 2025 the African Film Festival for Children & Youth 2025 was hosted at IL KINO in Berlin-Neukölln. THE FUTURE IS AFRICA is a biennial children’s and youth film festival that highlights artistic works from Africa and its diaspora. Launched in Berlin in 2021, the festival showcases films addressing both historical and contemporary social and political issues, fostering dialogue between young audiences in Europe and Africa.
The third edition, titled A Generation in Flux, focuses on the political and creative expressions of a new generation in transition. It presents films and discussions reflecting the perspectives of young Africans and diasporic voices who are increasingly visible worldwide—challenging social inequality, environmental harm, patriarchy, and the legacies of colonialism. Through this year’s film selection, the festival seeked to highlight how young people harness creativity to question power structures and envision new possibilities for a more equitable future.
The festival opened on September 17 with The Brink of Dreams by Ayman El Amir and Nada Riyadh, setting the tone for a week of politically and artistically engaging cinema. Curated by Andrea Voges the lineup featured films that explore resistance, empowerment, and visions of a more just future — from student protests in Nigeria (Coconut Head Generation), to Afrofuturist tales from Lagos (The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos), and poetic ecological reflections (Terra Mater). Beyond film screenings, the festival includes Q&As, creative workshops, and two major panel discussions.
Challenging and redefining the Western perception of Africa has long been a central mission of African cinema, one of the continent’s most influential artistic forms. In recent years, a growing number of films for children and young audiences have emerged—created by a new generation of young filmmakers determined to portray, raise awareness of, and ultimately transform the everyday realities of their communities.
