In Berlin on November 28th, 2014 Mr Mardomei Melicor, chargé d’affaires, a.i. of the Philippine Embassy received a section of the Berlin Wall donated by the Berlin City Government.

Ms. Margit Gehrcken of the Berlin Senate Chancellery officially presented Mr Melicor with the deed of donation of a part of the Berlin Wall to citizens of Manila during a ceremony at the Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World).

The section of the Berlin Wall was conveyed as part of an initiative to remember the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The 25th Anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall is an opportunity to reflect on how much society has changed since the days when Germany was divided. The Berlin Wall is a way of establishing a physical connection with history.

The Berlin Senate noted that “it was happy that part of the Berlin Wall would stand in Manila as a monument to remember that is possible to successfully overcome and reunify divisions and in Europe.”

The section of the Berlin Wall received by Mr Melicor was 22nd in a series of 40 sections that were formerly located at Potsdamer Platz. Numerous segments of the Berlin Wall have been given to various institutions and various Embassies since its fall on November 9th, 1989. Most recently segments of the Wall were put on display in December 2013 at the Temple House in Miami Beach as part of “The Heart of Freedom” art collaboration.

The piece of the Berlin Wall is expected to make its way to the Philippines in early 2015.
