The National Football League (NFL) has announced plans to host three games at Berlin's iconic Olympic Stadium by 2029. This decision reflects the league’s long-term commitment to Germany, a key growth market with a burgeoning fanbase. Alexander Steinforth, head of the NFL in Germany, confirmed that the league will hold at least five games in the country over the next six years, with Berlin taking centre stage for three of these matches.

The first NFL game in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium is set to take place next season, marking a significant milestone as the league continues to expand its footprint in Germany. Although the dates and teams for the Berlin games are yet to be announced, Steinforth hinted at the strong interest from teams with marketing rights in German-speaking regions, including the Detroit Lions, which feature German wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. This follows the success of previous NFL games in Munich and Frankfurt, where tickets sold out within minutes, and millions tuned in to watch.

The German capital last hosted an NFL game in 1990, and its return to the Olympic Stadium is being celebrated as a "historic moment." Beyond the excitement for fans, Berlin also anticipates significant economic benefits. The city is investing up to €12.5 million, hoping to replicate the tourism boom seen in Munich (€70 million) and Frankfurt (€110 million) during their NFL games. With Germany boasting 19 million NFL fans—3.6 million of whom follow the league closely—the NFL’s expansion in Berlin promises to enhance its global presence and further fuel the sport’s growth in Europe.
