Under the patronage of the Austrian Ambassador to Germany, the exhibition “Otto Wagner – Architect of Modern Life” was officially inaugurated last Friday in Berlin, offering visitors an in-depth exploration of the visionary work of Otto Wagner, one of the most influential pioneers of modern architecture. Hosted at the Museum of Architectural Drawing, part of the Tchoban Foundation, the vernissage attracted numerous architecture professionals, cultural figures, and art enthusiasts eager to rediscover Wagner’s lasting contribution to European modernity.

The exhibition presents a comprehensive selection of drawings from the Vienna museum collections, tracing Wagner’s artistic and intellectual evolution. From his historically inspired early works to his groundbreaking contributions during the Vienna Secession, visitors encounter an architect who continuously challenged prevailing conventions. His later, ornament-free buildings demonstrate a radical shift toward functional clarity, reflecting his conviction that architecture must respond to the needs of modern urban life.

Particularly compelling is the exhibition’s focus on Wagner’s connection to Berlin. His formative studies at the historic Bauakademie shaped his architectural outlook, while encounters with the legacy of Karl Friedrich Schinkel influenced his developing style. The presentation also highlights Wagner’s participation in major design competitions for landmark projects such as the Berlin Cathedral and the Reichstag Building, underscoring the dialogue between Viennese and Berlin architectural traditions at the turn of the twentieth century.

Curated by Andreas Nierhaus, the exhibition contextualizes Wagner’s work within broader cultural and social transformations of his era. Through carefully selected drawings and interpretative materials, the display illustrates how Wagner’s architectural philosophy anticipated many principles that would later define modernist architecture across Europe.

Open to the public until 17 May 2026, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to engage with the creative legacy of a master who reshaped architectural thinking and urban design. By highlighting both Wagner’s international influence and his historical ties to Berlin, the presentation reinforces the enduring cultural dialogue between Austria and Germany while inviting contemporary audiences to reflect on the origins of modern architectural life.
