ASEAN Day Reception 2018 in Berlin

Celebrating ASEAN’s 51th founding anniversary in Berlin with cultural performances and dishes from Southeast Asian countries

To celebrate the 51th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Berlin ASEAN Committee hosted a day reception at the Malaysian Embassy on October 25th. Delegates from different countries gathered together in the celebration of their strong relationship.

The reception was hosted by Vietnamese Ambassador, the current Berlin ASEAN Committee Chair. Around 300 guests joined this celebration: including diplomats from ASEAN countries, business leaders and German governmental officials participating in the event. In particular, Ms. Renate Künast, Member of the German Bundestag and Chair of the German-ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group, and Ambassador Ina Lepel, Federal Foreign Office Director-General for Asia and the Pacific of the Federal attended as the Guests of Honor.

The event, hosted in Berlin, also aimed to emphasize the relationship between ASEAN member countries and European countries, hoping to strengthen the relationship and encourage more cooperation.

Traditional dances and songs were performed by artists and locals from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines during the event. Philippine Cultural Attaché Mylah Rubio sang ASEAN’s anthem “The ASEAN Way” to express the spirit of the ASEAN identity and belongingness for the region.

In addition, all ten ASEAN countries provided the guests with their unique kinds of dishes and desserts. The participants in Berlin thus got a chance to experience the Southeast Asian cultures by taste, to promote understanding among different countries.
