News from Berlin. Last month the ASEAN-Germany Joint Cooperation Review was held at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) office in Jakarta, focusing on three primary areas: Regional Economic Integration; Environment and Climate Change; and Institutional Strengthening/Capacity Development. To date, Germany has pitched in more than €70 million to ASEAN operations and projects.

The participants agreed that Germany’s current assistance satisfied ASEAN’s needs and preferences, however both Germany and ASEAN recognized the need for improved connections between national and regional operations within ASEAN. The keynote speech by H.E. Dr. Georg Witschel, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Indonesia, highlighted the significance of the Asia-Pacific and ASEAN for Germany, emphasizing the parallels between the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Assistant Director of the Strategic Planning and Coordination Division of the ASEAN Secretariat, Ms. Lee Chen Chen, expressed gratitude to Germany for its enduring assistance towards ASEAN’s community building activities, affirming that the 2014 review would be directed towards the ways in which the existing partnership between ASEAN and Germany can be further improved.

Several detailed project proposals were reviewed. The pool of participants included representatives from the German Embassy in Jakarta, GIZ, along with representatives from ASEAN associated organizations and the ASEAN Secretariat.
