Ambassador Philbert Johnson's term as Ghana's first permanent Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Offices in Vienna was an important phase in Ghana's diplomatic history.

Ambassador Johnson was appointed in November 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 epidemic, and had the daunting responsibility of forming the Vienna Mission. From strengthening Ghana-Austria ties to gaining leadership positions in important global organisations, his tenure considerably improved Ghana's worldwide reputation.

Ambassador Johnson worked extensively to strengthen Ghana-Austria ties.

His campaign resulted in the reciprocal opening of embassies in Vienna and Accra, a crucial step towards strengthening people-to-people contacts and economic partnership. High-level visits, such as Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer's first official trip to Ghana in 2023 and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's historic visit to Austria in 2024, were critical in furthering collaboration in commerce, education, healthcare, and defence.

Under his leadership, the Vienna Mission was named Ghana's Best Diplomatic Mission in 2024. As Ambassador Philbert Johnson leaves Vienna, his services to Ghana's diplomatic service leave an outstanding legacy and a firm basis for the future. His relentless dedication to expanding Ghana's bilateral and international interactions has established new standards for strategic diplomacy, cooperation, and imaginative leadership.
