Ambassador Marlene Bonnici Appointed as Malta’s New Ambassador to Germany
Ambassador Bonnici Presents her Letters of Credence to President Steinmeier
February 24th, 2025At Berlin's Bellevue Palace on January 31, H.E. Marlene Bonnici formally delivered her Letters of Credence to H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany. With this inauguration, Ambassador Bonnici officially began her tenure as Malta’s highest diplomatic representative in Germany.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the bilateral relations between Malta and Germany. Ambassador Bonnici emphasized the strong ties between the two nations, underscoring their shared European values, and longstanding cooperation in various international fields, including the economy, culture, and education, at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
Ambassador Bonnici graduated from the University of Malta in 1989 with a Bachelor of Education with First-Class Honours. From 1991 and 1992, Ambassador Bonnici attended Oxford University (UK) as a Chevening Scholar to pursue postgraduate studies in Diplomatic Studies. At the Institut International d’Administration Publique (IIAP) in Paris, she pursued her studies in European affairs in 1999. Ambassador Bonnici started her diplomatic career in 1992 as First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Malta in Bonn from 1992 to 1995. Before this role, she served as Malta’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the EU.
With an emphasis on future expansion and collaboration, Ambassador Bonnici's appointment ushers in a new era in this long-standing partnership.
