Allemagnifik 2014 - Celebration of German Films in Brussels
June 11th, 2014
News from Berlin – German Culture Abroad: The Goethe-Institute in Belgium in cooperation with the Coopérative Nouveau Cinéma (CNC) is organizing ‘Allemagnifik 2014’, a year long event with the aim of highlighting the many facets of German film. The cinema Le Styx in Brussels will be screening a gem of German cinema on the first Thursday of every month. After having focused on the works of directors Friedrich Wilhelm, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders and Fatik Akin in spring, the summer months will see a shift towards the productions of renowned director Werner Schroeter. The aim of Schroeter’s movies is to appeal to his audience’s emotionality. They are variations of emergent and elapsing images and sounds that intensify through repetition, though pass unnoticed for those resistant to opening themselves up to their visual and acoustic allures. The upcoming screenings will be: ‘Tag der Idioten’ (1981) in July about a woman, who, unable to cope with life, voluntarily escapes to a psychiatric ward, ‘Der Tod der Maria Malibran’ (2006) in August about the famous 19th century singer who, legend has it, sang herself to her death and ‘Willow Springs’ in September about three melancholic women living in the Californian desert who find their community threatened by the arrival of an unknown man. All movies are shown in the original language - German with French subtitles.
