Afrika Tage Wien concluded its 22nd edition on 24 August after eleven days of music, dance, cuisine and cultural exchange on Vienna’s Donauinsel. Held from 14 to 24 August, the festival brought together artists, performers, traders and visitors for a programme presenting cultural traditions and contemporary creative expression from across Africa and its diaspora.

Music remained at the centre of this year’s programme. The line-up included Gambian kora player and singer Sona Jobarteh, Kenyan percussionist Kasiva Mutua, Cameroonian singer Valérie Ékoumé, Lesotho-born artist Morena Leraba and American vocalist Marla Glen. Their performances reflected a broad musical spectrum, combining traditional forms with Afro-pop, blues, reggae, percussion and other contemporary influences. Alongside the main stage, Kairo-Platz served as a second venue for daily unplugged sessions.

Beyond the concerts, Afrika Tage Wien offered visitors a wider introduction to African cultural practices and everyday traditions. The programme included dance and drumming activities, workshops, African cuisine, a children’s area and a trade and art market. Crafts, textiles, food and creative products formed part of the festival environment, enabling encounters between artists, vendors and audiences beyond the formal stage programme.

The Donauinsel also provided a distinctive setting for these exchanges. Situated between the Danube and the Neue Donau, the island is one of Vienna’s best-known recreational areas, while the Danube itself has historically connected the Austrian capital with other parts of Europe. By bringing African and diaspora cultures into this public urban space, the festival created an informal meeting point for residents, international visitors and participating communities.

Following the conclusion of the 2026 edition, the organisers thanked performers, visitors, partners, sponsors and the festival team for their participation and confirmed plans to return in 2027. After more than two decades in Vienna, Afrika Tage Wien continues to provide a platform where music, cuisine, art and personal encounters contribute to intercultural dialogue. Its annual presence on the Donauinsel illustrates how community-based cultural events can complement formal cultural diplomacy by creating direct exchanges between people from different cultural backgrounds.
