From May 13 to 14, 2025, Berlin hosted the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial, a high-level political forum marking the UN’s 80th anniversary and the 10-year anniversary of the Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping. The event brought together government officials, ministers, and heads of state from around the world to discuss the future of UN peacekeeping operations.

The Ministerial saw active participation from key African countries, including Ethiopia, Ghana, and Rwanda, which served as co-chairs in the peacekeeping process. This strong African representation highlights the continent’s critical role in international peace and security. Delegations from these embassies contributed to vital discussions on adapting peacekeeping missions to new global challenges, particularly those affecting Africa.

Member states used the platform to pledge new commitments aimed at closing operational gaps, improving mission effectiveness, and increasing peacekeeper safety. Many pledges involved partnerships focused on training and capacity-building, areas in which African countries are both major contributors and recipients. These cooperative efforts reinforce Africa’s role in global peacekeeping initiatives supported by their embassies in Berlin.

The event built upon preparatory meetings held earlier between late 2024 and early 2025, which were co-hosted by multiple countries, including African states. These meetings addressed future peacekeeping models, technology use, and integrated approaches to conflict management. A key study commissioned for the Ministerial proposed new modular, people-centered peacekeeping models designed to better address emerging threats.

The participation of African embassies in Berlin at this Ministerial underscores the continent’s leadership and commitment to peace diplomacy. The event strengthened political support and international cooperation for peacekeeping missions, reaffirming Africa’s vital position within the global peace and security architecture.
