The opening ceremony was attended by Dutch Ambassador to Germany Hester Somsen, Berlin’s Deputy Mayor and Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey, and Arjan Smit of Tulpen Promotie Nederland, the organisation representing Dutch tulip growers. Their presence highlighted the role of the event not only as a seasonal celebration but also as an example of cultural exchange between the two neighboring countries.

Breitscheidplatz, located next to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was transformed into a temporary tulip garden. Thousands of visitors gathered throughout the day and were invited to pick their own bouquets directly from the flower beds. The initiative offered residents of Berlin, visitors and tourists a chance to experience a Dutch spring tradition in the heart of the German capital.

Tulip Day events, that are organised internationally by Tulpen Promotie Nederland, a foundation that promotes Dutch floriculture abroad. By bringing large tulip displays to major cities, the organisation aims to introduce the Netherlands’ most recognisable flower to international audiences while strengthening cultural connections with partner countries.

By the end of the day, the tulip field had gradually disappeared as visitors carried their bouquets home. Beyond its colourful spectacle, the event demonstrated how a simple spring tradition can become a moment of shared celebration, reflecting the enduring friendship between the Netherlands and Germany.
