110th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide: Memorial Events in Germany supported by the Armenian Church and Central Council
Berlin and Frankfurt host tributes to victims of the Armenian Genocide
April 08th, 2025On the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, the Central Council of Armenians in Germany and the Diocese of the Armenian Church in Germany are organizing two official commemorative ceremonies in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main.
The first event will take place on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 19:15, at the Berlin House of Representatives (Abgeordnetenhaus Berlin). The program includes opening remarks by Jonathan Spangenberg from the Central Council of Armenians in Germany, a video message from Cornelia Seibeld, President of the Berlin Parliament, and a commemorative speech by German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Cem Özdemir (video message). Bishop Serovpé Isakhanyan of the Armenian Church will lead a prayer of intercession. The evening will be musically accompanied by Karine Gilanyan (piano) and Narine Yeghiyan (soprano).
The second commemorative ceremony will take place in Frankfurt am Main on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 18:00, at the Paulskirche, an iconic location. The ceremony will be opened by Dr. Bastian Bergerhoff, Treasurer of the City of Frankfurt, followed by Jonathan Spangenberg and a keynote speech by Professor Dr. Otto Luchterhandt, legal scholar and university professor (Emeritus). A special literary recitation by Anna Pfingsten Sahagian titled "I Remember Everything – From the Memories of a Survivor" will add a personal and emotional dimension to the event.
Participation in both events is only possible with prior registration. Please register by April 21, 2025 for the ceremony at the Berlin House of Representatives (Abgeordnetenhaus Berlin) and by April 23, 2025 for the commemoration at the St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt (Paulskirche) via email at 24april@dokd.de.
Both commemorative events are jointly organized by the Central Council of Armenians in Germany and the Diocese of the Armenian Church in Germany. They are held on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and aim not only to honor the memory of the victims, but also to raise awareness of the importance of historical memory, reconciliation, and intercultural dialogue in Europe.
