US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Arrives in Berlin

News from Berlin – On 8th October 2014, the US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland, will arrive in Berlin, Germany in order to meet with government officials and members of the Bundestag. During her trip to Berlin, Nuland will be discussing a number of bilateral and global issues with German officials, including Russian sanctions and the situation in Ukraine and Crimea.

Additionally, Nuland will be attending the Aspen Institute’s '40 years Aspen Jubilee Germany and Transatlantic Conference: "Germany, Europe, and the USA: Do We Still Need Each Other"'. Nuland will deliver a Keynote Speech at the conference. This conference will be taking place on 9th October 2014.

The Aspen Institute is an international non-profit organization with a focus on promoting a common understanding and encouraging a reflection of ideals and ideas of a good society in a non-partisan and non-ideological setting. With the 40-year anniversary of the Institute, the focus of the conference will be to allow political and economic professionals, along with students and young leaders, to discuss and debate the future of German-American relations.

The conference will explore topics of pending and future problems for German-American relations; NATO’s future after the Cardiff Summit; geostrategic questions such as the digital revolution as a threat to privacy and security; and how the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) can revitalize transatlantic politics and trade. The topics will be analysed and debated by specialists on both sides, in order to ensure an unbiased and well-rounded discussion.

Along with Victoria Nuland, speakers at the conference will include: Elmar Brok, MEP, Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Kurt Volker, Executive Director of the McCain Institute for International Leadership Washington; Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, Deputy Secretary General of NATO; Carlo Calenda, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Italian Republic; and Chris Painter, Coordinator for Cyber Issues at the US Department of State.

Victoria Nuland will be visiting Berlin for merely two days before travelling to Helsinki, Finland to meet with Finnish government leaders.
