The exhibition “U-Bahnhof Bundestag Berlin 2016 Europa” is taking place in the Berlin Bundestag underground station. With a height of eight metres and surface area of 3000 square meters, the station provides a space of architectural monumentality, under the political heart of the city.

The exhibition, conceived by Swiss artists Francine Eggs and Andreas Bitschin, comprises paintings, installations, musical instruments, interventions, photographs, and performances. Its main focus is on three different but related concepts: the underground station as a seductive monumental exhibition hall, whose walls and lighting represent the most modern museum standards; and the political and touristic centre of Berlin as a European city. The artworks presented have been created by sixteen Swiss and Berlin artists who reflect on the meaning of Europe. A Europe that has been fought for, idealised, and is now fragile. The artworks also challenge the political value of borders and of the current refugee crisis, along with the refugee policies in Berlin.

The exhibition is taking place in cooperation with BVG, the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau (Bauhaus Dessau Foundation) and the Kunsthochschule Kassel (Kassel University of the Arts). What is more, it is under the auspices of the Swiss Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Christine Schraner Burgener, and is supported by the Department of Arts and Culture of the Mitte district.

The Bundestag underground station is located between the Office of the Federal Chancellor, the Reichstag building, and the Swiss Embassy – specifically between Otto-Von-Bismarck Strasse, Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse and Willy-Brandt-Strasse. The exhibition will run from May 21st to July 17th.
