The annual report, commonly known as Human Rights Report, was presented by the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on March 13. It calculates abuses and advancements in terms of civil, political, and worker rights all around the world. It serves as a tool to hold those violating human rights accountable and to track progress of governments in regard to respecting the dignity of their citizens. However, it can also have negative influence on U.S. cultural, political, and economical relationship with countries violating human rights.

Secretary Pompeo highlighted several problematic countries, in particular Iran, South Sudan, Nicaragua, and Cuba. Moreover, he classified China as a “league of its own” in regards to human rights violations, and he even said the administration is considering sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for rights abuses against Uighurs in China.

Pompeo also tweeted that “the protection of human rights is central to U.S. foreign policy and to […] American values.” And pointed out that along with releasing the 43rd Human Rights Report, the United States also reaffirms their commitment to such fundamental freedoms.
