The President of the Portugal Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, comes to Berlin Wednesday August 7th for an official visit. His counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier invited him to the capital with the aim of consolidating the relations between the two countries.

Cultural events were organized in occasion of the visit. On Thursday August 8th there will be the inauguration of the “Between Imagination and Memory” exhibition by Paula Rego, one of most famous national artists. This event will take place in the cultural center of the Portuguese embassy in Berlin. In the evening of the same day the President will be in Roskock to the official opening ceremony of the Roskock Hanse Sail 2019 festival. The Portuguese singer Carminho, one of the greatest Portuguese Fado’s voices, will do a live performance.

The last visit of the President to Berlin was in 2016 when Joachim Gauck was the President in Germany. In that period many problems were dividing the two nations. Now Portugal and Germany are closer. This visit aims to consolidate this union also through the organization of cultural events promoted and advertised by the Portugal embassy. This is the proof that political and diplomatic events can promote cultural events in order to unify cultures, traditions, languages and Nations.
