The Irish Embassy in Berlin is partnering with the Mendelssohn-Society e.V. in presenting the “The Last Rose of Summer” Concert Series from the 28th of August to the 1st of September in 2017. Musicians from Ireland, Germany and beyond will have the opportunity to perform.

The concert series “The Last Rose of Summer” is organized by the Irish Embassy in Berlin and the Mendelssohn-Society e.V. with the support of the Slovenian Embassy and the Ignor & Partner Law Firm. The concert series will be presented in the form of lunchtime concerts throughout the week. German and Irish musicians will be joined by musicians from all over the world for the daily concerts at 13:00 o’clock.

The concert series receives its name from the music piece “The Last Rose of Summer”. Its lyrics were written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore in 1805, who was inspired by the roses in County Kilkenny. He then combined the lyrics with the traditional Irish melody “Aislean an Oigfear” (English: “The Young Man’s Dream”).

The concert series is directed by the French pianist Vladimir Stoupel, whose performances have been described as “pianistic fireworks”, and the renowned Iceland-native violinist Judith Ingolfsson. The duo will be joined by other esteemed musicians from Japan, Germany, Slovenia and Ireland.

The concert series will be concluded by the Irish harpists Siobhán Armstrong, who plays pieces from earlier time periods such as the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. She is known for her passion to revive the early harp and has expressed her devotion through the establishment of the Historical Harp Society in Ireland.

This festival, marking the end of the season, expands its horizons not only by involving German and Irish musicians and strengthening the relations between the two countries, but also by encouraging cooperation between performers from all over the world.
