Bilateral political relations between Germany and Kuwait are good and friendly. The year 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of German-Kuwaiti relations. Germany is highly regarded as a major political and economic force in Europe and as a country that has traditionally maintained good relations with the Arab world. This is evidenced by the numerous high-level political visits to Kuwait in recent years. Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle visited Kuwait in September 2012.

In 2007, the two countries signed an agreement on cooperation in security matters. The third meeting of the German-Kuwaiti Joint Commission on Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation was held in Berlin in November 2012.

Moreover, bilateral economic relations are good and untroubled. Kuwait is the fourth most important market for German goods among members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), after the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Qatar. This means that Germany retains its undisputed position as Kuwait’s principal trading partner in the European Union. In 2013, German exports to Kuwait were worth EUR 1.32 billion, compared with EUR 1.21 billion in 2011, an increase of 9 per cent. German imports from Kuwait increased by 31 per cent in 2013, to EUR 356 million, compared with EUR 270 million in 2012.

Kuwait holds substantial investments in Germany and has shares in leading German companies. A double taxation agreement between Germany and Kuwait has been in force since 2000.
