News from Berlin - The State Ministers and Secretaries of State responsible for European affairs of Germany, France and Poland are coming together in Herleshausen, Germany, on September 26th. The three countries are all part of the so-called Weimar Triangle, a loose group created to promote general cooperation between the three countries.

The goal of the meeting is not only to have a fruitful dialogue about current European matters. In fact, the main reason for State Minister of Foreign Affairs Michael Roth to invite his French and Polish counterparts and their entourage is the celebration and remembrance of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Besides that, the meeting will also serve as a commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the 2004 enlargement of the European Union, in Germany known as the Osterweiterung.

The Weimar Triangle itself was established in the German city of Weimar back in 1991 in a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Poland, Germany and France. Its original aims were for Germany and France to assist Poland’s emergence from Communist rule. Since then, many summit meetings have taken place between the leaders of the three countries, as well as other representatives, on a diverse range of subjects.

The meeting will be followed by a meeting on the September 27th, where the three State Ministers will attend a commemoration together with their Italian, Slovakian and Hungarian counterparts, to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The meeting will take place in Philippsthal (Werra), alongside the former border between the former East and West Germany.
