During the week-long celebration of Nelson Mandela, incorporating the heralded International Nelson Mandela Day, on the 21st July 2015 the staff of the South African Embassy spent their day at the Bahnhofsmission Berlin Zoo – the food bank and shelter situated in West Berlin.

The Bahnhofsmission Berlin gives food and shelter every day, all year round, 365 days per year, to more than 2 million people throughout the year free of charge with no need to register, while no one will be turned away. The shelter is run by a mix of full-time employees and volunteers that work around the clock in order care for the homeless around Berlin.

The Bahnhofsmission Berlin can be found at Jebensstraße, 10623 Berlin, and was first created in 1894 by Pastor Johannes Burckhardt originally set up to provide assistance and protection for women – due to the increasing industrialisation of the cities during the industrial revolution.

The staff and volunteers at the centre say that “every human being should be treated with the same amount of value and dignity, regardless of his wallet or his philosophical or religious beliefs. Therefore, members of other faith communities are expressly welcome. People with a migrant background, we are particularly committed because of the location of the train station.”

By visiting the South African Embassy website you can view the inspirational short film produced honouring the work done by the organisation. The film was produced by the Artrejo cinemaz production team, with the use of music allowed to be used for free by musicians Arndt Netzel and Nils Peter Neubauer – given to the cause of promoting a cause close to the hearts of many.
