Every year, the 7th April is observed as the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. The Rwandan Embassy of Berlin organized a church service in accordance with the memorials. The memorials are part of a wider program of reconciliation for the country, which still lives with the aftermath of the violence of the genocide which took place only 20 years ago.

On 23rd December 2003, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 7th April, the start date of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, as the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda, The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwandan Genocide became an official UN day of observance.

Each year, Rwanda holds a commemoration ceremony entitled Kwibuka – meaning “to remember” –to honour the lives lost in the 1994 genocide against Tutsis, to ensure that the awful events are never forgotten and never happens again – whether in Rwanda, or anywhere else in the world.

In 1994, in the space of three months, about 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in Rwanda, in an atrocity that has come to be known as the Rwandan genocide.

The Rwandan community in Berlin is taking part in the commemorations, and several events are taking place in Berlin and throughout Germany with the collaboration or Rwandans embassies and consulates.

The church service was hosted by the Rwandan embassy in Berlin on April 9th, and was attended by many exponents and participants, both Germans ad African.
