News from Berlin - Next week sees multiple establishments in Berlin take part in the 2014 edition of Record Store Day. The international event, which takes place on April 19th, sees numerous music shops and record stores organize exclusive events, whilst also selling records that are only available on that day. The first Record Store Day took place in 2008 in the UK and USA and has since developed into an increasingly popular and large event. Further participating countries include Canada, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. In 2008, ten artists showed their willingness to record material that could only be bought on that specific day. Since then, hundreds of artists have agreed to take part and also participate in in-store gigs and panel discussions.

This year, Berlin plays host to 18 venues and stores that will take part in this year’s edition. The event, which is keenly anticipated, draws in an international and culturally diverse crowd. This facilitates international exchanges and also shows how music acts as a cultural pillar. Interest in the event has steadily been on the rise and the sustained success indicates that the 2014 edition will continue in the same vein.
