Mike Pompeo to visit Europe

United States Secretary of State visits Eastern Europe, the EU Douncil, and Iceland

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is visiting heads of state in five European countries to discuss security and energy amongst other things.

United States Secretary of State completed talks in Budapest, Hungary yesterday with Prime Minister Orbán, Foreign Minister Szijjártó and Defense Secretary Benkő. The main topics of discussion according to the United States Department of State were the defense cooperation between the two countries, energy and regional security, and the bilateral support for Hungary’s neighbor, Ukraine.

On Tuesday February 12, 2019, Pompeo had meetings in Bratislava, Slovakia with Slovak President Kiska, Prime Minister Pellegrini, and Foreign Minister Lajčák to discuss Slovakia’s role in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Slovak security before visiting the Gate of Freedom Memorial outside of Bratislava. Later in the day of the 12th, Pompeo will travel to Warsaw, Poland in order to meet with Foreign Minister Czaputowicz to talk about security and energy issues in Poland. On Wednesday February 13, 2019 Pompeo represented the United States in co-hosting the “Ministerial to Promote a Future of Peace and Security in the Middle East” with his polish counterparts in Warsaw.

On Thursday February 14, 2019, Pompeo traveled to Brussels to meet with the Foreign Minister of the European Union Mogherini to discuss their views on the crisis in Venezuela and European Security in a broader sense.

On the last day of his trip Friday February 15, 2019, Pompeo will stop in Reykjavík, Iceland to meet with Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir and Foreign Minister Ţórđarson to discuss security in the North Atlantic, growing economic relations, and Iceland’s position as Chairman in the Artic Council.
