News from Berlin – The Embassy of Ireland in Berlin is hosting an event in collaboration with the Ireland Literature Exchange and Steidl Verlag Göttingen, a reading by an award winning Irish writer, Sebastian Barry, which will take place on Wednesday May 28th, 2014, at 19:00.

Steidl Verlag published a German version of Sebastian Barry’s  “A Long, Long Way”, which was translated by Hans-Christian Oeser into “Ein langer, langer Weg“. Passages of the book will be read in both German and in English, alongside a discussion with Barry and Oeser that will cover outlooks of the novel, which is set during the First World War. The story is the tale of a young Irish boy who has signed up to the British army; Barry uses poetic language to depict the stir of emotions that could have been felt by a young soldier into the hearts of his readers.

The event takes place at the Embassy of Ireland, Jägerstraße 51, 10117 Berlin on Wednesday May 28th, 2014 at 19:00. If you would like to attend, please email berlinrsvp@dfa.ie by Friday May 23rd.

You can read more information (in German) from the publication “Das Irische Monatsbuch Mai 2014” here: http://web.dfa.ie/uploads/documents/embassy/Berlin%20EM/de_monatsbuch%20mai%202014.pdf.
