Ministry of Foreign Affairs Increases Understanding of Medan People on the Issues of Indonesian Migrant Workers' Protection and Empowerment

Medan, 23 April 2019:In an effort to improve the understanding of the protection and promotion of Indonesian Migrant Workers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Center of St u in ASEAN University of North Sumatra (USU) held a Public Consultation regarding the issue of Indonesian Migrant Workers in Medan, April 22-23 2019.

"The Public Consultation is aimed at increasing public understanding in realizing the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community which pays attention to the protection and promotion of Indonesian Migrant Workers rights in the Southeast Asia region," said Riaz Saehu, Director of ASEAN ASEAN Socio-Cultural Cooperation.

The Director of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Cooperation further said that this activity was held as a form of implementation of the ASEAN 2025 vision: "Moving Forward Together" aimed at consolidating the development of the ASEAN Community, especially in improving the quality of life through people-oriented, people-centered cooperation, and initiated by the people, while related to improving Indonesian Migrant Workers services and skills, the Government has planned pre-departure orientation activities and reintegration programs for returned migrant workers.

The Public Consultation regarding the protection and promotion of Indonesian Migrant Workers rights to stakeholders in Indonesia became the work program of the Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the ASEAN Consensus on Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers agreed at the 31st ASEAN Summit, 14 November 2017 in Manila and the ASEAN Consensus Action Plan.
