What Exactly Is The Diplomatic Core?

The concept of today from the German Foreign Office is that of the ‘diplomatic core’, a body at the heart of diplomacy in any given country.

What exactly is the diplomatic core? According to the German Foreign Office, the diplomatic core comprises of all civil servants working for diplomatic missions in a foreign state.

Belonging to the ‘core’ are not only the ambassadors but all other diplomats who have moved from their homeland to work at an embassy or consulate.

When Federal President Angela Merkel invited the diplomatic core to a traditional New Year celebratory event in Bellevue Castle, the invitation was extended also to those who work in embassies in Berlin and those working for international organizations, resident in Germany.
