The Uganda Embassy in Berlin has celebrated Uganda's 55th Independence Anniversary at a colourful ceremony hosted by Uganda's Ambassador to Germany H.E Marcel R. Tibaleka. The function was graced by Mrs. Isabel Henin, Deputy Head of the East African Division at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany as Guest of Honour. The theme for this year's independence was, "Uganda's freedom must be anchored in the spirit of hard work, resilience and commitment." .

In his welcome remarks to his guests who included Ambassadors and Heads of Diplomatic Missions, senior officials from the Federal Foreign Office, Uganda's Honorary Consuls, business executives and the Ugandan diaspora, Amb. Tibaleka extended warm greetings from H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and pointed out that Independence Day was without doubt Uganda's most uniting holiday.

He briefly reflected on the tremendous progress Uganda had made as a nation. He said Uganda had continued to post impressive economic growth that was reflected by the increase in GDP to 27.6 billion US dollars as per the 2017 estimates. The agenda to transform Uganda in to a middle-income country is on course with noted investments in areas of road infrastructure, power generation capacity and the notable regional preferential investment destination. He called upon investors to take advantage of the current freedom and liberalized environment and invest in Uganda. He said Uganda needed more private sector led investment, particularly in the agricultural, manufacturing, energy and health sector, which would create jobs and more opportunities for growth.

He informed his guests that Ugandans remain one of the friendliest and welcoming people and encouraged them to visit breath-taking sites such as Murchison Falls Park, Bujagali rapids for white water rafting on the Nile or pay visits to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to see the world-famous Silver Back Gorilla, in one of only three such sites in the world.

The Guest of Honour, Mrs. Isabel Henin, praised the ever improving friendly relations between the governments and peoples of Uganda and Germany. She said that the German Federal Foreign Minister, Mr. Sigmar Gabriel had recently been on an official visit to Uganda where he met and held talks with H.E. President Yoweri Museveni and commended Uganda for its policy towards refugees. The Ugandan President held a follow up meeting with the German Foreign Minister at the sidelines of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, during which they discussed about the security situation in South Sudan, Burundi and Somalia. She also announced the visit of the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dr. Gerd Muller to Uganda from 11th to 13th October 2017.
