News from Berlin - This summer, between August 13th and August 24th, Berlin will host the 32nd biennial European Swimming Championship. Many great names in the world of swimming will attend the 12-day swimming event, which is thus sure to make for some very spectacular competition.

The competition will kick off with the open water swimming contest, together with the synchronized swimming matches. This will be followed by the indoor competitions and diving contests. As in every competition, winning is the highest goal for many of the competitors, with some of the swimmers only aiming for a top ten position.

However, the European Swimming Championship is much more than that. Sports is a way not only to test one’s ability, but also to share values, ideas and beliefs through the sport. Many of the swimmers in the European Championship share the same values and ideas about swimming, making the event in Berlin an opportunity for them to learn about each other’s culture and background.

That this is not just an idea, but something that actually happens, is demonstrated by the fact that some of the biggest rivals in sports are actually the best friends in ‘real life’. This way, the rivalry displayed at the 2014 Berlin edition of the championships can truly turn into friendship between some of the competitors in the long run.
