News from Berlin - The name of the future president of the European Council will be discussed in a bilateral meeting taking place in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in August, between the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

Although the exact date has not been confirmed yet, the Spanish press agency Efe informed yesterday that the meeting Rajoy and Merkel will take place before the European Council in Brussels the 30th of August. It is expected that both leaders will talk about their country’s relationship, the situation of the Spanish economy and the future of the EU.

Since the heads of State and Government of the EU were not able to come to an agreement on the composition of the Union after the European Parliamentary elections, the summit of the 30th of August is expected to be of key importance in the deciding both the president of the European Council and the High Representative of the Union.

Despite the fact that the Spanish government has not formally presented his candidacy, Rajoy hopes that the Minister of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain, Luis De Guindos, can become the Eurogroup chief. Moreover, the Spanish prime minister already has the support of Germany, both from its chancellor and its Minister of Finance, Wolfgang Schauble. In this announcement, the government took the opportunity to remind the media that the relations between Germany and Spain are currently enjoying a golden period, something the Spanish hope to capitalise on with regards to anointing their favoured candidate.
