News from Berlin – The German Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Brazil to watch Germany play in the World Cup Final on Sunday. The journey was confirmed after Germany qualified on Tuesday. Merkel will be accompanied by Germany’s President Joachim Gauck, both set to spend two days in Brazil from July 12th until July 14th. This is the Chancellor’s second visit to Brazil during the World Cup where previously she witnessed the Mannschaft crush Portugal 4 goals to nothing.

Germany victory against Brazil changed Merkel’s plans as she was scheduled to meet India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is traveling through Germany on his way to the BRICS Summit in Brazil scheduled for July 15th. The two were supposed to meet over dinner on Sunday, the day of the Final, at the invitation of the German part. The Indian officials stated their understanding at Merkel’s wish to attend the final on Maracana.

The German officials will have lunch together with the Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff. Sunday’s meeting is the second chance for the German and Brazilian leaders to exchange thoughts on the relations between their countries, having previously met on June 15th. Previously the leaders had discussed opportunities for strengthening economic ties and aiming to work bilaterally to combat issues of Internet privacy, climate change and global terrorism. Together with the German official another 15 state and government leaders are expected to attend the World Cup Final.
