The Klunkergarten is the green project of the roof garden culture “wattled crane.” It is a hidden spot because it is a green oasis on the roof of the shopping center Neukölln Arcaden, at the P5 deck in Berlin. The initiative started in the 2013 when a Berlin-team of entrepreneurs decided to restore a former garage roof in order to create a space for events and other initiatives in the fields of educational, research, biodiversity, sustainability and permaculture, and urban and social design. The garden includes both an indoor place with wood tables and coaches and an outdoor area with benches, plants and a sandbox for kids. On really hot days, the staff sets up every now and then a big splash pool as well.

The Klunkerkranich hosts a variety of events – from readings to concerts – on the rooftop. The highlight in April was the "Temporäre Kunsthalle Neukölln" with large format art installed and staged in the parking space 5 under the crane. A lot of live concerts take place involving musicians and artists from all around the world. On the 10th of April the Pharoah Chromium, a project by the German-Palestinian musician and performer Ghazi Barakat, exhibited creating an arabesque ambience with flutes and a golden mask. On the 15th of April the renowned DJ Falko Teichmann presented “Stranded Horse,” a very special band from France with an African harp and after the first edition, the Jazzy Berlin Sunset Rooftop Jam will continue the entire spring. Many more special guests will perform on the dance floor such as, for example, the Scottish Producer Konx-om-Pax, one of the leading animators, directors and illustrators operating in Glasgow today.

Within the regular’s events there are the “Kranich Food Market” a mixture of flea market, home-made nic-nacs and a street food market, and the urban gardening project “Kulturdachgarten" for interested urban gardeners. On the rooftop it is also possible to eat some specialties and every week the menu offered, which changes regularly ranging from vegan, vegetarian to meat and fish.

In 2015 the director Benjamin Riehm produced the documentary “Du must rein ändern leben (Live your Changes)” telling the story of the birth of the Project Klunkerkranich. He followed the labors for two years and summarize all in 89 minutes. It is possible to see the trailer here.

Quoting programmkino.de: “The film's unspoken message is: People, come to Berlin, as here everything is possible!” and Berliner Filmfestivals wrote: “Every minute of shooting was worth it. 'You must change your life' conveys a fierce, hustling attitude towards life. Slowly but surely a lusting sensation sneaks up on us in the cinema seat, luring us to at last live out life in the urban landscape…".
