News from Berlin. On Sunday, January 26th, The Embassy of India in Berlin invited members of the Indian community and friends of India to commemorate India’s 65th Republic day.

In India, Republic Day honors the date on which the Constitution of India came into force on January 26th, 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) of British colonial rule. The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on November 26th, 1949 but was adopted on January 26th, 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country’s transition toward becoming an independent republic.

Guests battled against icy conditions to take part in the Republic Day celebrations. The event’s itinerary included a flag hoisting by Ambassador, Shri Vijay Gokhale, a group singing of the National Anthem, a reading of the President’s Address by the Ambassador, a flute recital by Manickam Yogeshwaran and refreshments.
