Germany and Israel Celebrate 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

News From Berlin - October 23rd marked the start of the jubilee year celebrations which commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel.

Germany and Israel have close ties and work together on a variety of issues. This year marks 50 years of this diplomatic relationship. The President of the State of Israel Reuven Rivlin met with Germany’s ambassador to Israel Andreas Michaelis on October 23rd 2014 as they began the celebrations for this jubilee anniversary. It took place at the ambassador’s place of residence in Herzlia.

Both Michaelis and Rivlin made speeches, where they discussed German - Israeli relations and how this relationship has developed over the years. Michaelis acknowledged Israel’s need for stability and peace, something Germany has committed itself to achieving. They also celebrated the anniversary of German reunification. Rivlin acknowledged the Fall of the Berlin Wall, recognizing that it was a key event in history that represented the free world and showed his compassion for Germany with his final remark; “God bless Germany”.

In celebration of this relationship, a variety of events will be held in both Germany and Israel. These events will range from music, dance and theatre to film and literature. Furthermore various trade fairs and conferences will be hosted, as well as youth projects. These interactions between Germany and Israel will take place both on an official level as well as amongst the civil society.

There is a huge Jewish population in Germany, specifically in Berlin and thus this anniversary of diplomatic relations is sure to be celebrated with much enthusiasm here in Berlin.
