Vanni Xuereb is a graduate in Laws from the University of Malta, having submitted his doctoral thesis in 1988 entitled “The Law Governing the External Relations of the European Communities – A Mediterranean Perspective”. He then pursued post-graduate studies in Advanced European Legal Studies at the College d’Europe in Bruges, Belgium in 1988-1989.

Dr Xuereb’s career has centred on EU affairs. He served as Legal Research Officer at the Permanent Delegation of Malta to the European Communities and as Legal Consultant on EU Law to the then Malta External Trade Corporation, now part of Malta Enterprise. He also practised as a lawyer, specialising in financial services and EU Law.

In May 2008 Dr Xuereb was entrusted with the task of spearheading the process for the re-activation of the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee (MEUSAC) as an instrument for Government to consult with the constituted bodies and with civil society on EUrelated issues, disseminate information, and provide support on EU Programmes. In 2017 he successfully piloted the establishment of MEUSAC as an agency in terms of the Public Administration Act and oversaw its re-launch.

Dr Xuereb is a member of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE) and was also a member of the Experts’ Forum of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE). He is also a visiting lecturer in European Studies at the University of Malta.

On May 12, 2015, Dr Xuereb was created Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite of the French Republic in recognition of his role in bringing Malta closer to the European Union.

Ambassador Xuereb was Ambassador of Malta to Spain between January 2019 and August 2020.

He presented his credentials as Ambassador of Malta to Germany to the Federal President His Excellency Frank Walter Steinmeier on 16th September 2020.

He is fluent in Maltese, English, Italian, and can also speak French and Spanish.

Married to Charlò Baldacchino.

History

malta-embassy.jpg

Diplomatic relations were established between Germany and Malta in 1965, shortly after the country gained independence. Since Malta’s accession to the European Union on May 1st 2004, the traditionally close and amicable contacts between the two countries have become even more intensive. This is underlined by the mutual visits at the highest political level.
