News from Berlin - The work of the infamous moustache comes to Berlin! This represents a new cultural highlight amidst the world-class standard of Berlin exhibitions and museums. Salvador Dali invites you to come inside his brain, and what an extraordinary imaginative brain that was. “Surrealism for all”, the permanent museum exhibition takes you into the complex mind of Dali and the Surrealist movement, with over 400 exhibits at Potsdamer Platz.

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domčnech, born May 11th 1904 in Figueres, Spain, is one of the greatest artists and thinkers of the 20th Century. When one thinks of Dali, the immediate images that come to mind are the iconic melting clocks, and indeed the exhibition represents a literal melting pot, exhibiting a mélange of cultures. Although his Spanish identity is strongly exhibited in the pieces, through depictions of bull-fighting scenes and classical Spanish tales, one can also see his interpretations of Greek mythology and illustrations for French collections such as « La Divine Comédie », « La Nuit de Walpurgis » and « Le Tricorne ».

This private exhibition displays an excellent collection of Dali’s lesser-known works and illustrations, giving a real insight into Dali’s mind through the abstract and surreal sketches. The work is predominantly sourced from private collectors who have given lease for exhibition. The displayed paintings include recurring images of butterflies and exaggerated portrayals of sexuality, providing pieces to please all.

Dali explores the concept of the irrational; irrationality being a concept that the Germans are not stereotypically known for, with concise planning, logic and organization being an asset of the German culture. The popular and polarizing art of Salvador Dalí was always able to pull down walls, thus serving as an ideal commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This fixed arrangement, as a permanent exhibition, is open daily from 12pm to 8pm on Mondays to Saturdays and from 10am to 8pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays, so even the nine to five worker can afford a quick trip to this fantastic exhibition!
