On the 15th of April, a traditional concert of Portuguese Fado de Coimbra was held in the Passionkirche in Berlin.

Fado (which literally means 'fate') is the name of a typical Portuguese music genre. It is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, associated with feelings of fatefulness and melancholia. There are two main types of Fado, associated with different Portuguese cities: Fado de Lisboa, and Fado de Coimbra. Coimbra is beautiful, old, Portuguese city, with a great tradition of University students playing this type of music. The biggest difference from Fado de Coimbra and Fado de Lisboa is that the first one it's sung by a group of strictly male participants, and with a different set of guitars.

The sound of Fado de Coimbra is warm and emotive, which will set perfectly in the unique atmosphere of Passionskirche. This church is often used for jazz or world music concerts, due to its amazing acoustics. It was built between 1905 and 1908, in a Neo-Romanesque style, and can host around 600 persons sitting, and 70 standing.

This specific event called “Fado ao Centro” (“Fado to the Centre”) was found with the purpose of preserving and celebrating this 150 year old music genre, and making it live today. Traditional songs were presented, both old and new, not written by the members of the group, because it belongs to a national repertory, but rather interpreted by them. This was a show intended to be enjoyed by everyone, even the ones who don't understand Portuguese language, or have any idea of Portuguese traditions. Fado is a music genre that speaks to the heart, so it is certain that will touch everyone in the room.
