On July 26th 2019, The Pan African Women’s Empowerment & Liberation Organisation (PAWLO) organised the 10th Economic Forum of the Pan-African Women’s Day, at the Chamber of Commerce (IHK) in Potsdam, in order to foster a different image of the African woman in the society.

The event saw the presence of Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana, former deputy chairman of the Committee for Development and member of the Committee for the Rights of Women and Gender Equality at the European Parliament. In her speech, she encouraged African women to increase their business skills, in order to get into the labour market as entrepreneur.

As co-founder of “Dachverband der Migrantinnenorganisationen” (DaMigra), which represents women migrants in Germany, Ms Herzberger-Fofana wanted to draw the attention on the lack of information surrounding African women. She seized the opportunity to share her insight on the image of African women, which should challenge society’s stereotypical point of view. “The image of the African woman in the popular mind is that of an oppressed person without rights. This distorted image of the African woman should be corrected,” Ms Herzberger-Fofana stated.
