Berlin comes together for the annual celebration of the International Day of Yoga (IDY)

International Day of Yoga hosted by the Indian embassy in Berlin, for the fourth consecutive year

The event, consisting in a yoga demonstration and practice session, took place on the 21st of June at Independence Square Park. The event was supported by the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education and was done in partnership with the government of Sri Lanka.

The initiative saw a significant participation by members of the Indian community, Yoga enthusiasts and friends of India. As a prelude to the International Day of Yoga celebrations, the embassy was also responsible for the organization and execution of Yoga workshops for students and lectures held by Dr. Sundara Raman.

Once again, the International Day of Yoga proved to be a successful event, with more than 350 members on their online group. The event consisted in the practice of yoga, pranayama and meditation, with the aim of rejuvenating the body, mind and soul. It consisted in a guided meditation, with a series of teachers and instructors from Sri Lanka and Hatha Yoga Centre, however AAYUSH and My Yoga Lounge were the ones conducting it. It was celebrated in two phases, consisting of an initial morning session held on a cruise boat and the later celebrations held at the Indian embassy.

It is noteworthy to mention that the practice has already been granted international recognition. In December 2014, the United Nations officialised June 21st as the International Day of Yoga (IDY), with the aim of recognizing the ancient Indian practice as science’s holistic approach to well-being and health. Similarly, the initiative aims at promoting Indian culture abroad and served as an opportunity to create greater awareness in Germany about the healing powers of yoga in terms increased well-being for mind, body and soul.
