News from Berlin – As a representative of Austria, Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 which was held in Copenhagen on May 10th. With her song ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’ Conchita was the clear winner followed by the Netherlands and Sweden. She was elected by a 50:50 split between a professional jury and tele-voting of all 37 participating countries. In 1966 Austrian musician Udo Jürgens won the competition, but since then Austria has not won again and it is only the second time that Austria has competed in the final in the past ten years.

According to the European Broadcasting Union, the 60th annual Eurovision Song Contest will most likely take place on May 16th, 2015 with semifinals on May 12th and May 14th. The Austrian delegation has already announced some preliminary details. However, the venue for 2015 has not been determined yet. With the infrastructure in place to support the event, either Vienna or Salzburg will be the host cities. Conchita Wurst dedicated her victory to “everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom”. In addition she claimed that Europe showed that it has become a great community of respect and tolerance.
