The Australian Embassy began a project at Gallery Pavlova in Berlin two years ago, and since then has been working hard on the innovative and important project here. Gallerie Pavlova is an institution set up with the aim of supporting and representing contemporary photographers from Australia and New Zealand in one of Europe’s liveliest art and photography scenes: Berlin.

Following its successful first year, Gallerie Pavlova is gaining momentum and standing in the world of photography.  The gallery, which continues to serve as a platform from which Australia and New Zealand’s photographers have the opportunity to showcase contemporary photography, has allowed a number of emerging photographic artists to firmly establish themselves in the industry – something that otherwise would have been extremely challenging. The gallery offers receptions and events for photographers to showcase work and make acquaintance with other artists and important people within their field. In addition to this, Galerie Pavlova is now working towards its first Art Fair for the promotion of photography, which is a milestone in the organization’s progress.

Galerie Pavlova is completely self funded, and similarly to the artists it represents and works with, the organization depends on outside sources of income. While many of the artists work in a second film, such as teaching, consulting and light mechanics, the organisation is dependent on donations and support from both public and private donors. It has now been a year since the gallery’s first exhibition, ‘Between Worlds’ by Polixeni Papapetrou, which was the first and only event dedicated to giving publicity to New Zealand’s and Australia’s photographers, and the gallery has achieved many great things since then. That said, there is a way to go yet, and the gallery, along with the support of the Australian Embassy in Berlin, is urgently calling for support and sponsorship in order to help it continue with its vital work assisting both artists, and cultural and artistic exchange between Australia, New Zealand and Germany more generally.
