News from Berlin - The Australian Embassy in Berlin is supporting the ‘Cologne Meets Melbourne 2014’ series of jazz concerts in Europe throughout the next week. The second installment of the Australian-German cultural collaboration is hosted by Artpipes e.V., a non-profit organization that promotes international cultural exchange and relations. Artpipes institutes ventures within the arts that encourage an awareness of intercultural issues, using culture as a means to connect people, create shared experiences and promote understanding on a personal and professional level.

‘Cologne Meets Melbourne’ will bring together two leading female jazz composers from opposite ends of the world, for a series of concerts and radio broadcasts in mid-May 2014. Cologne contemporary jazz group, the Christina Fuchs Quartet ‘No Tango’ came together with Melbourne’s Andrea Keller Quartet in Australian almost two years ago. Artpipes' first cultural exchange initiative brought the two groups together in an international octet experience that debuted at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival (Australia), performing new music written by Fuchs and Keller.

No Tango has been a unique, creative influence in the German and International Jazz scene for over a decade. The unit’s blend of jazz, ethnic music and modern arrangements is captivating. The Andrea Keller Quartet have been praised as powerful players in the Australian jazz scene. The Quartet brings together a wide array of influences from jazz as well as other genres, from electronica to European contemporary music, which combine to construct a unique sound. The European leg of the event is organized in cooperation with the Düsseldorf District Council, Jazzkeller69 e.V. Berlin, Unterfahrt Munich, and West German Radio. The concerts will take place starting next Thursday, May 15th in Dresden. The group will perform in Berlin next Friday, May 16th at Aufsturz/Jazzkeller 69 e.V. in Mitte.
