On August 22nd, the Embassy of Brazil hosted a concert with the two winning groups of the StuVo-Jazz-Contest 2019, “Samba Breakfast Club” and “Chance.” The StuVo-Jazz-Contest is a competition for young jazz musicians organized by Jazzfest Neukölln, a jazz festival taking place every year in Berlin.

“Samba Breakfast Club”, formed by Tejas Ziegler (piano), Edward Krenzlin (bass), Arne Dykierek (guitar), Richard Luck (drums) and Shana Brown (violin), is a German student group from the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg conservatory of music, under the direction of Harald Kündgen. The vocal duo “Chance” is composed by Zakia Bensidhoum and Eva Swiderski.

These two bands won the StuVo-Jazz-Contest 2019 with Brazilian music, so the Embassy of Brazil decided to invited them to play at the embassy. The concert featured classics of Bossa Nova, a lyrical fusion of Jazz and Samba, and today one of Brazil’s most well-known music styles abroad. The tracklist included pioneers of the genre, such Antônio Carlos Jobim, João Bosco and Vinícius de Moraes.

The event catalyzes the Germano-Brazilian connection in Berlin, and the sumptuous interpretation of Bossa Nova tunes by German students is the most beautiful representation of this friendship. Intercultural dialogue is here shaped by rhythm and jazz, and resonates in the Embassy of Brazil, thousands of kilometers away from the streets of Rio do Janeiro.
