The Ambassador

Amb. Gunnar Snorri Gunnarsson

Amb. Gunnar Snorri Gunnarsson took office in 2010. Before his current posting, Amb. Gunnarsson served as Iceland’s Ambassador to China, also accredited to Australia, Kingdom of Cambodia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and Vietnam, from 2006 to 2009. Amb. Gunnarsson received his MA at the Edinburgh University in 1977.

Amb. Gunnarsson was the Permanent Secretary of State in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Reykjavík from 2002 to 2006, Ambassador to the European Communities, Belgium, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein from 1997 to 2002, Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva including WTO and EFTA from 1994 to 1997.

Furthermore, he was Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Under Secretary for External Trade, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in Reykjavík from 1991 to 1994, Minister Counsellor, Icelandic Embassy, in Brussels from 1988 to 1991, Deputy Permanent Representative in the Icelandic Delegation to the North Atlantic Council, in Brussels from 1987 to 1988, Counsellor, Icelandic Embassy to Paris and Deputy Permanent Representative to OECD and UNESCO from 1984 to 1987.

The Ambassador was also First Secretary of the Icelandic Embassy to Paris, and Deputy Permanent Representative at the Icelandic Mission to the OECD and UNESCO from 1981 to 1984. From 1979 to 1981 he was First Secretary, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in Reykjavík.
