A Taste of Portuguese Cinema in Berlin

News from Berlin – Between the 16th and 20th of August, a Portuguese cinema exhibition will take place in Babylon cinema in Berlin. Varying the format (documentary, animation and fiction), “Cinemagosto – FilmFokus Portugal” is intended to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the agreement between former East-Germany and Portugal, in 1964 regarding the invitation for Portuguese workers to work as guest-workers in Germany, which was in need of a greater labor force.

Supported by the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin and by the Camões  Language and Cooperation Institute, the event guidelines revolve around universal Portuguese themes including, communities, the dictatorship, colonial war and the diaspora. Each movie will be introduced and opened to public debate and open and closing ceremonies with the directors in attendance.  

Amongst the chosen full-length films it is possible to find films that have achieved international success, such as “José and Pilar”. This documentary by Miguel Gonçalves portrays the relationship between the nobel-prize winning José Saramago and his wife, Pilar del Rio. Another award-winning movie on display is “Tabu” by Miguel Gomes, which one a Silver Bear in the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. Moreover, movies from Pedro Costa, Manoel de Oliveira, Abi Feijó, along with others, are also part of the schedule.
