News from Berlin – The year 2014 is particularly important for the Sri Lankan Embassy, as it coordinates events and happenings all over Germany to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

For this occasion, the Embassy of Sri Lanka acts as an umbrella organization, supporting initiatives mainly carried out by Honorary Consulates all over Germany. As of today, celebratory events have been held in different cities around Germany by the Honorary Consuls of Bremen and Hamburg. The celebrations started in June 2013, with the visit of Hon. Today May 16th, the Honorary Consul in Frankfurt, Nihal S. Samarasinha, organized an event to bring the celebration to this city. The event was put together in cooperation with the Diplomatic Council, a think tank of which he is a founding member, the Sri Lankan airline and the German-Sri Lankan business council. Among the 450 people who attended the event, there were Sri Lankan expatriates and business personalities and, of course, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, H.E. Sarrath Kongahage, who was the guest of honor on the occasion.

This event was an occasion to emphasize the importance of the cooperation between the two countries, and to encourage German investors to deepen their work and relations with Sri Lanka, highlighting its potential in terms of skilled workforce, strategic geographical location, developing infrastructure and banking system. The relationship between the two countries is particularly enhanced in the field of tourism, as many Germans enjoy to visit the Island for their holidays.
