News from Berlin – “Kulturweit” – the international cultural voluntary service of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is now five years old. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who gave the impetus to “kulturweit” during his first term, celebrates, together with guests from the field of politics and culture, on Wednesday, September the 17th, at Stattbad Wedding. “I am very pleased about the great popularity of the program. “Kulturweit” opens eyes, broadens horizons and changes attitudes. It aims at teaching the young generation about taking responsibility”, added the Foreign Minister.

From 9 am, guests from ministries and civil society, as well as former volunteers and coaches, met to participate in workshops under the title, “Five years kulturweit; more is possible: visions, themes, network”. The workshops deal with the future development of the program, while participants discuss in which way ”kulturweit” can be further improved and decide which should be the main focuses for the next few years. Under the hashtag “5jkw”,  the workshops will be reported live on Twitter.

“Kulturweit” allows young people between the age of 18 and 26 to engage in the Foreign Ministry’s cultural and educational policy for a period of six or twelve months. The placements are located in more than fifty countries. The German Commission for UNESCO is responsible for the implementation of the goals of the program and has successfully deployed more than 1,900 young volunteers since 2009 from Ethiopia to Vietnam.
